Farley Baricuatro Tanzania, Africa
Twelve Million? Who really knows. Generations of Africans were
kidnaped and sold as slaves in the Americas from the 15th to the 19th
century. The estimate is only for those who made it ALIVE as “exports.”
A third probably died before being shipped and the other third perished
on voyages. In return trips to Europe, traders brought back American
rum, tobacco and sugar. To complete the trade triangle, the ships carried
European goods back to African kingdoms. “Memory for the slaves” by
Clara Sornas, at the former auction square-in front of the now Anglican
Church , Zanzibar, Tanzania.
Rob Stark Cholame, California
There is another, more permanent and somewhat official, memorial to James Dean in Cholame. This one is at the gas station and diner
on route 46 just west of the Interstate 5. Dean died on September 30, 1955 a short distance away from the town of Cholame and
further down the 46 from where this was taken. It’s a fast two lane road with rolling hills on either side that are for the most part void
of any trees or bushes. On the day that he died, Dean was driving to a car race in Salinas where he was to compete in his Porsche 550
Spyder. He had bought the car with his entire paycheck from East of Eden.
