PREFACE
Just a few weeks after the completion of this
issue’s ‘Around the World’ series on memorials
I heard the news of the death of Australian
actor Heath Ledger, who was living in New
York. With the speculation of suicide, drugs,
and depression came comparisons of the late
James Dean and Marilyn Monroe. There’s
always a mystery surrounding the death of
those who pass too soon and with that passing
comes a level of immortality that, sadly, can
only come from dying young. Well-known
names like Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis
Joplin, and Kurt Cobain, all dying at the age
of 27, have created a very warped reality of
death for the living. When the life of someone
famous becomes such a sensation it seems only
natural for his or her death to be
sensationalized as well. But in actuality,
everybody dies and whether some lived life as
a spectacle or as average as can be, there’s
nothing ordinary at all about human life.
In this issue, artist Gert Jan Kocken explores
this idea of a death less ordinary. With his
scenes of death, completely void of blood and

of the memorial that had been splashed all
across the news stations and only a couple of
weeks after it had been built; the exhibition
had already been taken down. / K.Hinton
