ORDER & CHAOS
His professor thought he was insane. His experiments were deemed
too dangerous for the university faculty to support. They would not be
considered for his industrial design coursework. So Philippe Kindelis trudged
home with his plans under his arm, but the dream to control the lighting of
T
his north London flat using water still alive.

that H20 and electricity shouldn’t mix. The resulting design looks like a
Victorian egg timer.
The glass apparatus that contains the conductive water is custom made, while
the wooden stand in which it hangs is built from unwanted balustrade. With
the full beaker spun to the top position, its contents flow through a narrow
pipe between two live electric cables, taking three volts from the mains. Once
the circuit is closed, the corresponding light bulb illuminates. It’s extinguished
when all the water has passed into the bottom beaker, itself an eco-friendly
timer solution.
“Technology is becoming more and more important for the home, and I
question whether we realize this,” says Philippe, who recently graduated in
industrial design from St Martins College, London, and also has an
engineering degree from Cambridge. “I wanted to confront this by taking
things that we use everyday, that we take for granted… and add water.”
