Course description

This is a pioneering course that will be taught in e-learning format with tutoring long distance support, allowing students to gain a qualification wherever they are located. It is targeted mainly at IIA Inc’s and IIA UK’s professionally qualified internal auditors, allowing for entrance into the programme at various stages depending on the level of professional qualification already achieved. Students will be required to complete a number of units listed, but will be allowed exemptions depending on the level of qualification already achieved with the professional organisations.

The maximum level of exemptions will be given to students who have completed IIA Inc’s Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or IIA UK’s Advanced Diploma in Internal Auditing and
Management, who will only be required to complete the Critical Analysis and Evaluation in Internal Audit, and Research Methods and Methodologies units, and the dissertation. It is our aim to:

– Develop closer working relationship with the professional bodies

– Develop further knowledge of the professional qualifications internal auditors

– Develop further expertise in transforming ‘standard’ learning materials to e-learning format.

Career opportunities

Graduates who possess a combination of an MSc and the IIA professional qualification are likely to be highly employable in senior positions in internal audit.

Typical background of applicant

Students who have completed some or all of the IIA Inc’s CIA professional qualification or students who have completed one of the IIA UK’s previous or current qualifications.

Professional contacts/industry links

LSBU has developed very good links with both the IIA Inc and IIA UK over the last few years, which have strengthened with the appointment of Andrew Chambers as the Delloitte Professor of Internal Auditing. We have been chosen by IIA UK to be their partners in the development of the materials for their redesigned professional qualifications. The IIA UK’s redesigned professional qualifications were launched at the end of 2005 and the first two student cohorts have already completed their modules.

Additional notes

Professor Andrew Chambers joined LSBU in 2005, bringing with him his wealth of experience and knowledge in the fields of Corporate Governance and Internal Audit. Professor Chambers has led the development of the course and played a major role in the development of links with professional body. We are also looking to develop additional units that non-professionally qualified candidates will need to complete to achieve Certificate, Diploma and degree levels.
