Course description
The key to building enterprise websites is the ability to populate websites with content derived from large databases. E-business depends on the collection of information from various sources including customers and the management of records using databases. Websites are supported by databases in several ways including: maintaining information published on websites, tracking users and customers of the site and tracking usage information, storing the structure and content of web pages and information collected from input forms. The information stored in databases is a valuable asset on which the organisation is dependent upon, and he protection of that information is a key issue. The course aims to cover these issues.
Graduates will be able to:
– Appreciate the impact of database and internet technology on e-business
– Identify and formulate information related problems and, where appropriate, deliver an information system using an web and database technologies
– Be able to appreciate the security and privacy issues and the implications on e-business
– Be able to undertake research in the field of database and web integration.
Career opportunities
Employment prospects for graduates are excellent. Graduates enter positions such as: Web-Database design / development, Systems Administration and Solution Architects. The course provides a direct path to PhD level research within the faculty.
Course units in profile
Perspectives of Project Management: Emphasises the need to manage the development of software. Networking and Connectivity: explores the development of web and database related technologies on wireless and handheld devices. Internet Technologies: provides a broad knowledge of the technical and social issues affecting the emergence and development of the internet and the World Wide Web. Databases Systems: develops skills using the following types of database related technology: relational, objectrelational, XML and web databases. Research Methods: provides a focus for them to investigate a particular object oriented field in depth. Security: covers security and privacy issues surrounding the integration of web and database technology. Data Warehousing and Data Mining: Explores how Business Intelligence is developed using Data Warehousing and Data Mining techniques. Software Engineering Design Workshop: Looks at applied integration of technologies for bespoke problem domains within the ongoing research. Projec /Dissertation: A major research and development project resulting in the production of a 10,000 word dissertation. Projects can be industry based or based internally within one of the faculty research centres. All students are allocated an internal project supervisor from the faculty academic staff.
