Course description
This programme provides students with a developmental experience aligned with current service needs. There is an emphasis on both relevant academic and applied practice skills and th programme aims to enable students to progress their careers in practice, teaching and/or research.
Participants will construct an award using the available Occupational Therapy units as appropriate and will access other units in the Allied Health Professionals Scheme. We are in the process of developing other occupational therapy specific units, and would be pleased to discuss specific requirements/needs with you.
Occupational Therapy for People with Severe Mental Health Problems: This unit will critically examine occupational therapy and practice within this setting. Students will appraise the complexity of defining mental health need and will be able to enhance their knowledge and skills of assessment and intervention approaches within the context of changing social policy, service delivery and inter-professional work. The values in mental health practice will be discussed, as will how these interface with the philosophy and practice of occupational therapy.
Occupational Therapy for the Older Person: This unit will examine the complex interplay of ageing and pathology and the interface of this with social, economic, legal and cultural factors. Students will critically evaluate the role and skills of the Occupational Therapist in working with the health and social care needs of the older person and the meaningful collaboration with users and carers. The unit will enhance students’ knowledge and skills of assessment and intervention approaches within the context of hanging social policy, service delivery and inter-professional work
Work-based learning
A major feature of this programme is the option for you to pursue specific knowledge and skills in your area of practice through the use of workbased learning.
Career opportunities
Aimed specifically at practicing occupational therapists who wish to engage in further post-registration development or continuing professional development. The units available are designed to meet emerging service needs and are mapped to the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework, ensuring that they have a clear association with current practice.

Occupational Therapists who have a professional qualification in a relevant area. We will also consider accreditation of prior learning gained elsewhere.
