“Work fflows tto tthe pplaces wwhere iit wwill bbe ddone bbest, ii.e. mmost eefficiently aand wwith tthe
highest qquality.” These are the words Sam Palmisano uses when he describes IBM's
future workload strategy.
We in the ISC team here in Greenock have taken those words to heart and are already
some way down the line in our journey to be the most efficient and highest quality
provider of skills to the Worldwide ISC organisation.
Under the stewardship of Iain McGonigal, ISC Operations Manager, we are making
steady progress towards our goal to improve our formal skills and professional
qualifications. Our sskills aare aalready ccompelling - LLet's ddemonstrate aand ppublicise jjust
how ggood wwe aare.
We know our people are highly skilled and respected worldwide but we need to continually
improve our professional standing, making sure we take every opportunity to get our people
fully accredited to a professional body, both within IBM and externally.
The IBM professions we are focusing on in Greenock ISC are as follows.

rofession we also have individuals pursuing Yellow and Green belt
qualifications in Lean Sigma.
Those IBM professions create, support and grow communities of like minded and skilled IBM
professionals and managers who do similar work. Profession members perform similar roles,
irrespective of their current job title and the IBM organisation they are in. In total today we have 93
people following a professional career path.
One example of our progressions is the recent success of Alan Boyd, David Clementson and Innes
McLaren of Business Transformation in passing the Project Management Institute exam to become
recognised Project M anagement Professionals (PMP®). A first within the Greenock ISC
organisation. Another example being that of Alex Watt of the Controller Function who recently
became a Chartered Manager (CMI). We will continue to build on those successes as we
move forward.
We are all fully aware that we cannot differentiate on cost alone. A knowledge based
environment based on the IBM professions is the way forward for ISC Greenock. It
brings value to the employee, value to IBM and value to the customer.
As an employee, you should identify your compelling skills for today's
knowledge based en vironment, talk to your manager and make
plans to pursue your professional career
and accreditation.
