Seafair2008
he month of June began with sunshine and
excitement in the build-up to the secondT
Seafair Haven festival — a maritime event
for traditional and classic craft which come
together in a celebration of the Haven
waterway. By the time the vessels had
registered and the festival commenced, the
conditions had worsened, threatening to ruin
all the plans painstakingly put in place over
the previous six months.
Hosted by Milford Haven Port Authority as part of
its 50th Golden Jubilee celebrations, this year’s
event set out to celebrate our magnificent waterway.
Alongside MHPA and Tidechaser (maritime event
consultants), a tremendous amount of enthusiasm,
time and hard work was dedicated by volunteers
and community organisations in ten host ports.
Although the weather put a stop to many of the
initial plans in the host ports, the spirit of the festival
remained. Despite the adverse weather conditions,
140 vessels and around 400 crew participated in the
event, doubling the number attending in the
inaugural festival in 2006. Where visitors could not
get to the host locations by sea, they did their best
by land, greeted by warm welcomes from the
communities that awaited them.
The traditional craft from all over Europe were
joined by four magnificent tall ships, La
Recouvrance, Jeannie Johnston, Earl of Pembroke
and Kaskelot. During the event, these amazing
vessels welcomed aboard community groups,
dignitaries, local businesses and more than 2,000
schoolchildren.
