Pompey Victory Parade – Sunday 1/5/08
The FA Cup Final took place at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 17/5/08 when Portsmouth Football Club (ie Pompey) beat Cardiff City 1 - 0. The highly
emotional win was watched by over 89,000 fans at the Stadium. It was Pompey's biggest match since winning the Cup in 1939. It also means that they
will compete in Europe for the first time in their history thereby capping another outstanding season.
Early plans were made for a Victory Parade to Southsea sea front if Pompey won, as was done for previous celebrations, eg promotion to the Premiership. It
was planned for a 1500 start from Fratton Park, culminating with a massive presentation to the team on a stage constructed near the war memorial on
Southsea Common. The route was Goldsmith Avenue, Fratton Bridge, Victoria Road North, Bradford Junction, Winston Churchill Avenue, and the Terraces to
Clarence Pier, thus avoiding the Guildhall area.
Sunday 17/5/08 was hot and breezy and the police estimated that the number of people lining the street and at the sea front event equalled the population of
the city!
The procession included two buses from the City of Portsmouth Preserved Transport Depot collection in the shape 4 (LRV 996), an open top PD2 decorated
with banners and rosette, and 112 (ORV 989), a closed top PD2 with a rosette. A third vehicle from the collection, Atlantean 236 (BBK 236B), was decorated and
stood by at Fratton Park in case of need but in the event was not used. First Hampshire & Dorset provided two open toppers, 39971 (MOD 57IP) from Weymouth
which arrived at Portswood on the Saturday evening, and borrowed First Devon & Cornwall 38002 (D702 GHY) which had arrived at Portswood on Thursday
15/5/08 from Camborne, Cornwall, in case it was needed. See above for full details of this bus.
39971 (MOD 57IP) led the procession, carrying press photographers, cameramen and commentators, followed by 4 (LRV 996) carrying the victorious
football team, and 38002 (D702 GHY) with more Pompey players. 112 (ORV 989) followed. Last of all was Bournemouth Transport Ltd. 323 (FJ07
DWA), a Volvo B12B (chassis YV3R8L2297A120157) with Caetano Levante C49FLT body (F073043010) in a special blue version of National Express livery to
celebrate Pompey's success. National Express sponsor Wembley Stadium, hence the appearance of the coach which was not on loan to First
Hampshire & Dorset Ltd. The convoy moved very slowly and stopped many times.
Due to the lateness of closing Goldsmith Avenue, Mercedes Vario 52513 (S513 RWP) on service 13 A from the City Centre was turned on the roundabout near
Fratton Park and returned to Fratton Bridge. Volvo 66205 (S805 RWG) on service 17 was trapped for some time. Route diversions elsewhere were well organised.
An excellent day out was enjoyed by all. 5
