ost L&D professionals will
recognise the challenge:
developing the interpersonal
skills of an employee who is an expert
in their field. It could be an auditor who
has to present their reports to boards and
committees, it could be an engineer who
has just been given a managerial role or
it could be someone in IT who takes on a
customer service or sales support role.
Subject matter specialists of this kind
typically spend many years deepening
their knowledge of the subject – but little
time learning how to relate effectively to
others. No man, or woman, is an island.
We need other people – and impact is
interpersonal. There’s no getting away
from the fact that we live in an age
where people need to have impact to
be successful. It’s the ‘difference that
makes the difference’ when it comes to
achieving success at work.
Who needs impact?
Everyone! It isn’t just the technical
experts who need impact. People
in all professions are becoming
ever more aware that personal
impact is a way of gaining a
competitive edge over their
rivals – and that without
it they risk missing out on
