“I have learnt that it is not just the practice of law that is important but also being able to understand the client’s objectives from a commercial point of view and to ensure that we achieve them in the best possible way… It has truly been an invaluable experience in the first half of my training to be part of a team that is committed to its clients and to the work that it undertakes.”Phebe Phua, Trainee 2006 – 2008, Assistant, Tax

Commerciality and Commercial awareness – it’s not all about section numbers and clauses

Commerciality and commercial awareness are terms often bandied about by law firms, but what do these words actually mean?

From the first day of your training contract you will need to be able to step into the shoes of our clients; understand what keeps them awake at night; what their strategic plans for the future are; the key developments in their industry and how your advice can help them.

Our belief in the importance of commercial awareness is not limited to our trainees. We actively seek to recruit lawyers who can demonstrate a commercial industry background, especially in the sectors where we are most active. A number of our lawyers have previously worked in industry either as in-house counsel or in management positions prior to joining Davenport Lyons. Therefore both you and our clients are able to draw from their legal and industry knowledge.
