In the summer we asked the question whether this is the best year ever for Welsh sport. If
you missed it and want to know all the major highlights of Welsh sporting history, then go
to Rob Cole’s article at
www.sportingwales.net His conclusion was that 1908 was a slightly
better year for Welsh sport than 2008, not least because of the Olympics success for Wales
at the start of the 20th century.
Well, I think the 21st century has more than caught up now. Three Welsh gold medals is a
remarkable tally in the modern era, as well as the Paralympic success with another 10 Welsh
/ < 3 E
gold medals. Out of all that success, we make no apology for singling out Nicole Cooke and
David Roberts in this edition.
Nicole Cooke started it all off with the fi rst British gold at the Beijing Olympics, she was the
only Welsh sports star to win an individual gold and the fi rst Welsh woman ever to win an
individual Olympics gold medal. So with full congratulations to fellow gold medallists Geraint
E / G = 4
Thomas and Tom James for their tremendous achievements, we tell Nicole’s remarkable
journey here.
David Roberts is also a straightforward choice, tied with Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson with
11 Paralympic gold medals, he has become one of Wales’s top sporting stars.
