Commonwealth Games gold medallists Iwan Thomas, Kirsty Wade and
Berwyn Price were all inducted into the Welsh Athletics Hall of Fame by
former Olympic gold medallist Mary Peters at a gala dinner held at the
Vale of Glamorgan Spa and Resort.
They were the second group of Welsh athletes inducted into the Hall of
Fame. 400m runner Thomas finished fifth in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics
and won a silver medal in the relay, his best year was probably 1998 when
he won the Commonweath, European and World Cup titles.
Kirsty Wade is one of Wales ’s finest female athletes, winning three

amateur sports clubs across the uk could be losing out
on thousands of pounds meant for their coffers because
they are failing to benefit from a form of tax relief.
Many amateur sports clubs can register as Community Amateur Sports
Clubs (CASCs) without making any changes to the way they operate or
are structured.
David Wilkinson from Club Charity, a company set up to help CASCs
gain maximum benefit from their registration, explained how the system
works: “The Minister of Sport has encouraged sports clubs to promote
sport in the community and as a reward offers a massive 80% mandatory
rate relief funded from central government at no cost to the local
authority or the rate payer. In addition CASCs can claim Gift Aid on most
donations and qualifying fundraising income. This is an attractive 25%
enhancement which is added by HM Revenue & Customs on every £1
donated by UK taxpayers”.

“Unfortunately, clubs often miss out on this extra income because it is

time-consuming and too expensive to process the paperwork on small
donations. Many CASCs also do not realise that gift aid can be reclaimed
on donations going back to when they first registered.”
Mr Wilkinson said Club Charity have solved the ‘paperwork problem’
of reclaiming gift aid by automating the process. The online donation
processes the company uses, he says, is pre-checked and audited by HM
Revenue & Customs.
To meet the CASC criteria, a club must ensure: * membership is open to
the whole community; * all facilities are available to * members without
