Nose to nose: The Eclipse 500 and a De Havilland Dragon Rapide of pre-WW2 vintage. In its
day, the Rapide was every bit as disruptive a technology as the Eclipse. This particular plane
was used to fly passengers to Paris. They were taken by bus from central London to Abridge
in Essex, then flown to an airfield close by the centre of Paris. Journey time from London to
Paris in 1935? A little over two hours. Plus ça change…
The Dragon Rapide pictured is operated from Duxford, the home of the Imperial War
Museum’s aviation section, by Classic Wings, which runs a variety of bespoke corporate
