48 KENT
Transport
Historically, rail travel from Kent to London has been
slower than in some of its neighbouring counties.
Road routes were designed to connect the capital
with the Channel Ports, while maritime facilities on
the Thames and Medway embankments gradually
faded as the commercial rationale for their
existence disappeared.
But now, the Channel Tunnel, the introduction of Eurostar services
from Ashford International and now Ebbsfleet International stations,
and finally the completion of a high-speed rail line, High Speed 1,
or HS-1, have all allowed Kent to leapfrog its way into a truly 21st
Century transport system.
From December 2009, Southeastern’s services from across Kent
will feed into HS-1, slashing commuter times and making the
business case for locating in Kent even more compelling.
For example: Canterbury to London currently takes 1hr 42 mins. That
will reduce down to just over one hour; Folkestone 1hr 38 mins to
1hr 3 mins; Ramsgate 1hr 59 mins to 1hr 24 mins; travel time from
Ashford will halve from 1hr 23 mins to 37 mins and as for anyone
living within reach of Ebbsfleet International station, the journey to
Central London will be just 17 minutes.
That is the picture for anyone with work or business in London. Where
Kent strikes double gold is in its access to continental Europe.
Eurostar's services, particularly from Ebbsfleet International, offer the
simplest, fastest and most worry-free journeys to the two key cities of
Paris and Brussels. But it is easy to think that these two centres are all
Eurostar offers. Not so. Easy links to high-speed rail lines put many
towns including Amsterdam, Cologne, Lyon and Frankfurt within
easy reach. The same ease and convenience works for leisure
travellers too.
For those wanting to fly to more distant destinations, Gatwick and
Heathrow airports are only an easy car journey away via the M25,
while Kent International Airport at Manston and London Ashford
Airport at Lydd between them offer short-hop services to Europe as
well as business jet facilities and fast, efficient freight services.
