PORTRAIT LIGHTING KIT
The Portrait kit is always popular and
comes with some nice bits and pieces,
including the Backlite reflector with Gels
and one of my favourite accessories, the
Bowens Grid reflector kit. This kit
comprises of the 60 degree Grid
reflector and a set of 3 Honeycombs.
Although the Grid kit comes with the
Portrait kit, it can be bought separately.
The Grid set is so versatile and can be

used for product, portraiture and still life
photography.
The Grid reflector itself is a real all
rounder and has many uses in the
studio. It’s quite small, only 18cm in

diameter with a soft silver lining. It’s that
lining that allows the Grid to give a very
clean, crisp and even output that covers
a wide area. Each of the 3 Honeycombs
fit neatly inside the rim of the reflector

and come in different sizes,

⁄8th
3
⁄8th and
¼. That means the holes in each
Honeycomb will allow a little more light
to pass through to give very subtle
results.

One tip when using the Grid with any of
the Honeycombs, try to use them with
the modelling lamps switched off. As
you can imagine, heat does build up
quickly within the reflector, so by turning
the modelling lamp off, it will make them
easier and safer to use. As I said in the
last issue, working without a modelling 6
lamp is easy and once you’ve adjusted

the lamp and power to give you the
effect you want, it can then be turned off
for the rest of the session.
Using the Grid with the

⁄8th honeycomb,
(the smallest holes), will give you a snoot
like effect; perfect for low key
photography, hair lighting and effects
