HOUGH TO:

ashion and beauty are two areas of photography that are often grouped together; they can however be distinctly
different depending on the approach you take. A lot of the time under all the media hype, beauty is often
forgotten and pushed to the bottom of the pile. Let’s try not to forget that the power of a facial expression has
the ability to stop a person in their tracks. It’s amazing how each face is so completely individual and the range of
expressions so broad that you’ll rarely get two similar shots. Throw into the mix the broad range of Bowens reflectors,
softboxes and light modifiers and the hundreds of combinations and you can either be left bewildered or rubbing your
hands with delight.

beauty images and how to make your own
photographs ‘pop’ to life.”
“Aim to meter your key light around f11. A lot depends of course
on the focal length of your lens. The longer the lens, the less
depth of field you’ll get and the more you will have to increase the power
of your lights to enable you to stop down if you need to. Try to focus on
the eyes of the model and keep the background out of focus! The back
light and side light metering will vary depending on the clothing or skin of
your subject, so you will have to adjust according to the attire.
If you’re using a second light to fill the shadows, meter this head at
approximately 1-2 stops lower than the key light. Once all your lights are
set up and metered individually, take an overall meter reading and get
shooting.”
Set-Up #1.
Set-Up #1. PRECIS.
“Use the Softlite reflector as your
key light and moderately light the grey
background paper with the gel. Use
the strip lights to very gently light
the models cheek bones. Again, be
careful and try to adjust the power
according to the models skin type.”
