I had the privilege of sharing some of my thoughts about the publishing industry during the
Sales Manager Robert Giarratana
recent Winter Market at the Design Center of the Americas here in South Florida. I wasn’t a
National Accounts Bill Decker
headliner or anything. The show was sponsored by publishing behemoth, Architectural Digest,
Joseph Tana
and they have plenty of star power to pull off these events without my help. You can read more Regional Accounts Liane Barr (CA)
about the AD market events beginning on page 30. I was invited by one of our long-time
Client Services Anita Zinman
(more than 20 years and counting) industry partners and advertisers, Brunschwig & Fils, to
Sales Coordinator Jennifer Thiessen
speak at their newly renovated showroom’s open house.
Webmaster Ognjen Ilic

I must confess that I wasn’t really looking forward to the engagement. Not for any other reason

than I’m mildly introverted and, as such, I have never been drawn to large social/networking
events. You see, I’m a front man by default. Our company’s founder, Richard Giarratana, has
Editorial Office
never sought the spotlight and for 20 years has quietly, yet successfully, published interior

design source books and directories around the country without ever printing his name in a

single publication! Therefore, when we brainstormed the idea of our Design Trade Magazine as
New Product Releases
a distinct title from our already-established Design Trade Directories, Richard wanted no part

of the masthead. When I explained to him that every magazine has a publisher and that he

was the logical choice, he looked at me, his junior business partner of 10 years, and said, “Tag, Reprint Inquiries
you’re it.” “But you’re the founder,” I protested. “And besides, you’re the one with the vision for

this magazine, I’m just the facilitator.” “No,” he said, “you’re it.” So guess what? I’m IT!

Please don’t hold that against me or Richard. We are committed to covering and supporting

the people, products and projects of fine design. Through the years, we’ve made lots of friends

like Brunschwig & Fils, and we wanted to find an appropriate vehicle to give back to them and

the many other showrooms and manufacturers that make this industry so special. That’s why
California
in this issue we’ve featured success stories such as George Cameron Nash, Walter Lee Culp,

trade. Additionally, we have an entire section of new products that we call “Great Finds.”
Well, I must say that despite my apprehensions about speaking at the DCOTA event, I

thoroughly enjoyed myself and received a lot of positive feedback from my audience. In fact,

President / CEO Richard Giarratana
I had the privilege of meeting the delightful editor-in-chief of Architectural Digest for the past
Senior VP / COO Kyle French
38 years, Paige Rense, who we interviewed for this issue on page 43. Ironically, my topic at the
VP / Marketing Bill Decker
open house was how to get recognition and notoriety in today’s hyper-competitive world of
VP / Sales Robert Giarratana
design magazines and Web sites. Evidently, recognition and notoriety are aspirations in which

Richard and I have no personal interest. But please remember, don’t forget to make friends, Administrative Assistant Anne Bernau
promote your work and enjoy yourself because, “Tag, you’re IT!”
