Training and Personal Development

All the skills required in the modern workplace – and how to get them.

Construction skills for the Future

The construction industry in Wales is booming. There are more than 400 new projects anticipated in Wales, worth a total value of £14.6 billion, planned from 2007 until the end of 2012. Recent research from the Construction Skills
Network forecasts that 25,450 more recruits will be needed to meet the demand of these projects by 2011.

Construction Skills Wales is the Sector Skills Council and the main voice for employers within the construction sector, working to deliver a safe, professional and fully qualified construction workforce. It has been working closely with the Welsh Assembly Government to develop a construction strategy for Wales, which was launched in February.

The continued success of the Welsh construction industry depends on its ability to attract and retain talented people of all ages. In collaboration with young professionals and employers, Construction Skills Wales educates and encourages young people to pursue a career in construction through initiatives such as National Construction Week and its Construction Ambassador scheme.

In addition, Construction Skills offers company development support to construction businesses and a variety of training and qualifications ranging from apprenticeships and college courses to on-site assessment and training for those already working within the sector, ensuring they have the right skills to do the job.

Construction Skills’ On-Site Assessment Training (OSAT) scheme enables workers to obtain NVQs at levels 2 and 3 without having time off-site, which is beneficial to both the individual and their employer. Workers need to obtain an NVQ, as well as Construction Skills Health and Safety Test to obtain their Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card, which is the most recognised qualification within the industry. With OSAT an assessor visits workers on site and assesses whether they have the required experience and are working to a standard equivalent to an NVQ.
