As material becomes thinner (lower weight
and higher strength), protecting the surface
quality of a coil from damage is a priority.
Safe systems, which can stack coils up to
three high, and are flexible enough to store
different coils of varying widths and diam-
eters (on as small as surface area as possible,
to reduce cost) have been developed by of development of new storage systems. H

This is no mean feat as hot rolled coils can
weigh from 10 – 35 tonnes. The KLP system
can take a maximum of 100 tonnes on one
coil position (four blocks). The material from
which the KLP blocks are made is a special
plastic which flexes slightly when the coil
is pushed on it so that there is a larger con-
tact-surface area between the coil and block.
There is therefore less pressure per square
centimeter, argues Brouwer, than for coils
which may be stored on wooden blocks, steel
plates or frames etc. This also has an impact
on safety and coils can be stacked up to three
