Focus on coil processing
Both Otte and Becker confirm that there is
Katrin Bauer, assistant to
managing directors at H&L
a noticeable customer trend towards more
coated products.
“We see a continuing trend towards more
coated materials i.e. organic coated and
believe that most customers will follow the
philosophy of using coated coil rather than
having the related costs of internal coating/
painting processes in their own factories,”
they both highlighted. “Logistics and service
has also become more of an issue for us and
our customers. Price is not so much the cen-
tral issue for us with customers –good logistics
infrastructure, a central location, a wide range
of material…..these have more emphasis. We
need to be able to quickly supply material to
customers. Most need the material quickly

is a business area which, Becker believes, will
continue to grow in the next few years.
“The majority of the tonnage we deliver
(90%) is steel (some aluminum etc.),” Becker
continued. “High strength steel is normal day-
to-day business for us. We started very early
to follow this development – around 50% of
our stock is specialized, high strength deep
drawn qualities etc. Around 40% of our stock
is coated – in the old days, we had more cold
reduced stock but this will be replaced more
and more by coated products for automotive
or domestic appliances sectors etc. We believe
that, in the future, more domestic appliances
will be made from organically coated, anti
fingerprint, transparent-coated products.”
