art pilgrimage mumbai
Neville Tulli’s recommendations for
Mumbai:
1. Chemould Prescott Road was set up in 1963,
and was one of the first galleries in Mumbai,
so it has produced two generations of
genuine lovers of art. The gallery has a love
and understanding for the subject,
and are doing much to take forward the
contemporary agenda.
2. Sakshi Gallery and Galerie Mirchandani +
Steinruecke are both trying to have a
greater international dialogue and take things
forward positively.
3. Chatterjee & Lal was set up by Mortimer
Chatterjee and Tara Lal, who are promoting
certain young artists who do not have
necessarily a market, and use various media
and performance-related means to exhibit.
Like many young promoters, they are there
because they love the process; they do not
always succeed financially, but their financial
awareness is greater.
4. Bodhi Art is aware of the market financially,
but at the same time they are giving chances
to many individuals; and because they have
galleries in other parts of the world, it is
beneficial to certain artists to show there.
5. The National Gallery of Modern Art has
an outpost in Mumbai, but by and large it has
not been activated and energised yet.
The development of the website www.
saffronart.com has opened up many people’s
interest in Indian art because it reaches
countries that physical auctions or galleries
cannot. It is a very important site, and I think it
has done more than most in promoting
awareness of contemporary artists.
6. Jehangir Gallery is a regular visitor space and
a bit of a free-for-all – anyone has a chance to
show and sell their work – but it is one of the
few places with a walk-in public, which brings
with it a different, special kind of energy.
7. Kala Ghoda is an area where efforts are being
made to create a kind of arts district. Four or five
institutions are getting established, but it still has
a long way to go before creating any kind of
artistic cultural ambience. Nonetheless, the
attempts are definitely there and should be
supported. The other old but top-quality
galleries, such as Pundole and Cymroza, are all
facing page: Valay Shende, Untitled (installation
view, Sakshi Gallery, mumbai), 2007
evolving and doing good work, along with the
Guild, Tao, Fine Art Company.
