HIGHLIGHT EVENTS//MARCH 2008
14 FEB-30 MAR
Throughout the month of March, the new PYMCA Gallery at
the Vibe Bar on Brick Lane will be hosting an exhibition of 30
years of street and club culture photographs by Paul Hartnett.
Over the last three decades, the artist has painstakingly
documented club kids and their culture from around the
globe, often concentrating on those who have dressed up and
celebrated their extraordinary lifestyles, such as the late Trojan
(pictured left), Leigh Bowery (above), and the regulars at
Bowery’s infamous 80s club night Taboo.
“What intrigues me are the motivations to dress-up,”
comments Hartnett, “the resourcefulness and the need to be
seen as an individual.” If you thought that dressing up began
with Scottee, Jodie and BoomBox, get along to the Vibe Bar
for an education in outlandish couture and gay clubbers from
yesteryear.
