Last Man Standing
Seraphim Falls
• Despite a mixed reception, Seraphim Falls
was noted for its excellent lead performances
by Pierce Brosnan, Liam Neeson and a bit
part by Angelica Huston. Critics also took
notice of the film’s subject matter, that of
the persistent Confederate Officer (Neeson)
and the ambiguous Union Captain on the
run (Brosnan). Seraphim Falls is set after the
American Civil War and ends in a fight between
two men who represent two differing ideals:
the gripping climax in the scorching heat of
the New Mexico desert does not seem too
dissimilar from the current ‘fight’ in the harsh
landscapes of Middle East.
3:10 To Yuma
• Based on a short story by the revered writer
Elmore Leonard, originally and brilliantly filmed
in 1957, starring Glenn Ford and Van Heflin, a
new version of 3:10 To Yuma was released in
2007 starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale.
In his review of the film, A.O. Scott of The New

York Times wrote:

His comment bears some relevance to 3:10 To
o
Yuma and other Westerns post-9/11. At a time
when many Americans voice their objections

to the motives of the Bush Administration, and
in particular the American military and political
residence in the Middle East, a film such as
3:10 To Yuma suggests clearly defined heroes
and villains do not exist – a more frightening
state of affairs which forces us to ask, ‘ Who can
we trust?’

The Western on TV
e
• In 2002 writer Joss Whedon – famous for Buffy
and Angel – created a short-lived yet fabulous
s
Western-Science-Fiction series called Firefly:
upon its release that year it was a failure but
has since built-up an extensive cult fan base.
The series is filled with bouts of good humour,
sleazy characters, saucy females and all the
common traits of the Western and it seemed
Firefly
that although the first season was not even
