Bowland College Tutor’s Handbook 2007/08
Financial One of the most common problems for students is lack of finance.
Assistance
First year students often have to fend for themselves for the first time
and have little knowledge of how to budget responsibly on the limited
for Students
funding available to them. You can assist them by helping them to
develop and carefully consider their budgeting. This is something that
can often form part of a tutorial for your tutees in the first few weeks
of the academic year. Guidance is also available from the Students'
Union Advice Centre where students can pick up leaflets on how to
prepare a budget and seek professional guidance from a debt
counsellor. Student Support Services have also produced a handy
leaflet on personal budgeting.
Financial support for students includes:
• Access to Learning Fund (ALF)
Government Funds, usually given in the form of non-repayable
grants; available to home students who, after having taken out the
Student Loan are still experiencing financial difficulties. Students can
apply at any time - they do not have to wait until they have run out of
money to apply. Assessment is based upon the relationship between
income and essential expenditure over the academic year.
• Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)
Students with disabilities may be eligible for additional help towards
course related costs. Further information from the Disabilities
Adviser. Tel: 92109.
• Student Aid Fund
Available to help those students who do not qualify for Government
help through the Hardship Loan and Fund (likely only to be
international students). Only available on a very limited basis to
students who encounter a serious emergency situation. For
further information contact the Student Support Office.
• College Grants and Loans
There are two ways the College can provide direct financial
assistance for Bowland students:
1. Emergency College Loans. Students with modest and
temporary financial problems can apply at any time to the College
for an interest free college loan of up to £100. These are normally
repaid as soon as funding allows or by agreement with the
Assistant Senior Tutor. This funding is only available to those
with emergency and/or temporary funding difficulties and is not
available to top up a student's income just because they have not
budgeted carefully enough. Application forms are available from
the College Office.
2. College Welfare Grants. These are small, non-repayable cash
grants to students who have suffered unforeseen exceptional
financial difficulties not of their own making, e.g. expenses
concerned with illness, disability or accident. Claims may be
made at any time to the College by a letter sent to the College
Office marked "Welfare Grant Application".
