Bowland College Tutor’s Handbook 2007/08

Intercalation Intercalation is an official period when students are allowed to
interrupt their degree studies and temporarily leave the campus.
Intercalation is normally granted on compassionate grounds and, due
to the way courses are structured, the absence is usually for a whole
year.
The procedure for obtaining permission to intercalate is quite
straightforward. It is initiated by the student (usually advised by the
College tutor) arranging an appointment to see a Student Support
Officer (University House, ext. 92082) who will discuss the application
with the student. Views will be sought from the student's tutor and/or
Senior Tutor and of the departments in which the student is studying.
If all agree it is in the student's best interests, intercalation will be
granted. If disputed, the student (normally with his/her College tutor)
will be asked to see a small committee composed of a Pro-Vice
Chancellor and two Senior Tutors. If the request for intercalation is
rejected, the student may contact the College Principal to begin an
appeal.
The most common grounds for applying to intercalate are:
• major medical or psychiatric problems
• domestic or family disruption
• severe financial difficulties
• temporary loss of ability to pursue academic work.
Intercalation is granted only if there is a reasonable expectation that
after a year these difficulties will have disappeared or subsided to a
tolerable level. Intercalation is not granted when it is felt that students
will not return. In that case they should simply leave the University.
The student's departments will be required to state that there is a
high probability that the necessary courses will be available in the
following year, an important point to check in particular if intercalation
starts mid-way through the session. Another vital check is that the
student is "in good academic standing" (this means being up to date
with all coursework, or having firm arrangements to submit anything
missing).
The Health Centre and Counselling Service may submit supporting
evidence to the Intercalation Committee if the student wishes.
