Developed specifically
for transformers in
switch-mode power supplies, the cores offer adjustable insertion
height while retaining the same footprint. They can be used for
both standard wire wound transformers in AC/DC and DC/DC
converters and for planar transformers.
Compared with conventional ETD/ER/E core designs, PQ cores
boast a stable round centre leg and larger outer surfaces. As a
result, the length of copper wire can be reduced, lowering
transformer production costs. Moreover, the larger outer areas are
said to provide better heat dissipation. The PQ core shape has been
optimised, such that E core transformer performance can be
reached with smaller dimensions and less weight.
The PQ cores are available in a range of ferrite materials: N49,
N51, N87, N92, N95 and N97.
