Manufacturers’ plans for 2010
Europe is certainly hitting the headlines. Unfortunately, for some countries, for all the
wrong reasons. The financial magic of the economic wizards is finally falling apart to
reveal a fiscal truth that some governments would rather keep hidden. The damage
this does to political parties, personal reputations and money lenders is irrelevant to

me, what’s done is done. What matters is how industry weathers this uncertainty and
starts delivering the value and growth the general populations require.
News
For electronics manufacturers the tools for managing uncertainty must include

market intelligence, automation, plus a flexible workforce and supply chain. Luckily,
both industry associations and private research companies are working hard to
interpret the markets and forecast trends. Likewise, automation hardware and
software is readily available.
Possibly the most important issue is the flexibility of today’s workforce and supply

chain. Firstly, jobs are being saved by companies and employees working together to
ride out the storm. Secondly, the supply chain has spent the last 10-years developing
and investing in processes, technologies and facilities designed to provide an

unparalleled level of flexibility. This issue is littered with articles explaining exactly
how distributors are tackling challenges including obsolescence and allocation.
News reports suggest European growth requires manufacturing powerhouses, such
as Germany, to target export markets with their high value goods, thus generating
new wealth, some of which will be spent buying products and services from smaller
European countries. As this process starts to move, I’m pleased to say the supply

chain is ready and waiting.
