Credit Crunch to increase UK
holidaying, report says
New research published by the Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) has revealed that almost half of
the British population is now more likely to book an outdoor break during 2009, due to the economic
downturn. In a survey conducted at the start of January, 49% of adults who were asked stated that
the credit crunch has made them more inclined to go on an outdoor based break in Britain, rather than
head abroad. The continuing weak state of the Pound against the Euro and Dollar is also convincing
more consumers to stay in this country.
The survey also tested which outdoor activities are most popular among the general GB population.
Walking came out top, with 51% of all adults participating, while camping (21%), road cycling (14%),
longer distance hiking (11%) and mountain biking (10%) are also popular. While 37% of people either
never or very rarely take part in outdoor pursuits, 20% participate in outdoor activities two or three
times a year and 43% do so at least once a month or every week.
Full details and data from the research will be made available to all OIA members and a summary will
be posted on www.outdoorindustriesassociation.co.uk

Winter boost for Grivel
A hard, cold winter is proving a massive bonus for ice climbing and mountaineering hardware specialists
Grivel. The Mountain Boot Company, which distributes the brand, has reported that December was the
best month for Grivel sales in the whole of the company’s history in the UK. The Mountain Boot
Company has required an enviable reputation for its superb stock flow and customer service but they
had to order extra shipments for December to keep up with the huge demand. Grivel sales were 40%
up on the previous best-ever sales month. Steve Roberts, MD of the Mountain Boot Company,
commented: "A cold hard winter is always beneficial for sales but we did not expect to see such a high
volume of demand and we are very grateful to Grivel for being able to supply the extra stock on time.
We pride ourselves on having the very best stock flow system but even we could not foresee how big
the demands for Grivel would be during December – long may the cold snap continue!"
