Charles Chisnall
Charles is a great believer in self
improvement. The seminal
moment in his working life came in
1994 when he swapped a job in
retail management for a career in
Network Marketing. Our guest
reviewer selects three books to
stimulate the mind and view the
world in a different way.
The Bagel: A Cultural History
by Maria Balinska
Maria Balinska comes from a long line of bagel-munchers, although it was not
until her student days at Princeton that she actually had her first taste of this
weighty snack-with-a-hole. It was coloured green in honour of St Patrick's Day,
demonstrating that bagels had come a long way from 17th-century Poland,
where the Jewish Council of Krakow provided our earliest documented reference.
At that time, the worthy elders limited the scoffing of bagels, which used
expensive wheat instead of cheap rye flour.
The bagel went downmarket for long periods, with only the most financially
challenged citizens eating and peddling it in the street. In the 1880s, it was swept
across the Atlantic with the early waves of Polish immigrants but took time to
reach its current $900m annual US sales. Even in the late 1950s, newspaper
articles had to explain what it was - and how to pronounce it.
Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us
by Seth Godin
Seth Godin focuses on the role that LEADERSHIP plays in change and makes some
powerful observations about the difference between MANAGEMENT and
LEADERSHIP. Management is about maintaining stability, about perpetuating the
status quo, it is about ensuring that things are done the same way that they have
always been done. It is about avoiding change. For managers, change equals risk.
Leadership, on the other hand, is about creating change that people can believe in.
Leadership doesn't avoid change, it thrives on it. For leaders, change equals
opportunity.
It is very easy to read. I read it in a couple of sittings and the only thing that slowed
me down was the fact I made so many notes in it! I highly recommend it. If you are
interested in leadership, then you MUST read this book. You will not be
disappointed.

with their friends during the working day. According to Matthew Fraser and
Soumitra Duttaa it is fast becoming an essential part of working life.
Throwing Sheep in the Boardroom: How Online Social Networking Will
Transform Your Life, Work and World looks at the power and impact social
networking sites are having on our personal and professional lives. Fraser
and Dutta claim that senior managers must understand the dynamics of
the Web 2.0 revolution before it sweeps through their corridors and into
their boardrooms.
Don’t be a spectator in life, be a player.
