There are so many adventures to be had in the Capital Region it would
be a shame to wear yourself out on the journey. Step on board a
comfortable, air-conditioned train and let someone else do the driving
while you admire the breathtaking scenery and plan your next stop-off.
A
mtrak’s Regional route runs from north of Baltimore
(reaching as far north as Boston for long-distance
adventurers), then winds its way through Washington,
DC and central Virginia and on to Newport News in the east.
Most visitors will start their trip by arriving at one of the
Capital Region’s international airports – Amtrak serves the
Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) Airport directly, so
you can get a taste of the stress-free comfort of rail travel before
you even arrive at your lodgings.
Baltimore, Maryland, has an eclectic, lively atmosphere. The
waters of the vast Chesapeake Bay that it fronts have been
absorbed into every aspect of the city’s life. Baltimore’s Penn
Station is at the northern end of the upmarket Mount Vernon
district of the city, home to some impressive mansions and
cultural attractions like the Walters Art Gallery and Peabody
Conservatory of Music.
A good place to start exploring the city’s shopping, dining
and nightlife is the Inner Harbor. Vibrant districts like Little Italy
and Fell’s Point offer a fantastic variety of eating, drinking and
entertainment (crab cooked and prepared dozens of different
ways is a speciality and not to be missed). Fittingly for the
birthplace of baseball icon Babe Ruth, there is the
Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards, home of the
Baltimore Orioles baseball team. This location plus many others
are served by Baltimore’s convenient Light Rail network that
connects to Penn Station.
An easy forty-minute train ride south of Baltimore is
Washington, DC. Television and fi lm have made images of the
White House, US Capitol and Washington Monument familiar,
but nothing compares to the take-your-breath-away experience of
seeing them for real. DC’s landmark Union Station is in the heart
of the city, just a stone’s throw from the National Mall – a large
Amtrak
Washington area of parkland home to the majority of must-see buildings.
