with Capitol Hill, the broad boulevards, and the stunning
classical architecture designed to give this symbolic citadel
of national pride its grandeur. Even though the US has no
monarchy, Washington still has majesty. It also has its mighty
monuments, and of course, its world-famous museums. The
Smithsonian Institution is unbeatable, but there’s also the
new and thought-provoking museum dedicated to the culture
of the Native American Indian. On the ‘hip’ side, there’s the
novelty of the freshly-opened Newseum, well-named since it’s
dedicated to the history of the media.
If heritage and history is your delight, head southeast into
the aptly-named Historic Triangle of Virginia. Jamestown –
named after King James of England – is the site where
the first English-speaking pioneers stepped ashore after a
gruelling five-month voyage from London. At Jamestown
Settlement a simple stockade marks the early settlement,
and you can go aboard replicas of the three ships that
carried those 104 hardy male souls across the Atlantic to the
New World. Cleverly, the women followed later. Adjacent is
Historic Jamestowne, site of the archaeological dig that has
unearthed the original James Fort.
Nearby is Colonial Williamsburg, rebuilt with no expense
