Virginia, with all the buildings in their exact locations, just
as they would have been throughout the entire grid-pattern
township. Every day, townsfolk dress the part and act out
their roles as the Butcher, the Baker and the Candlestick
Maker in what is correctly billed as America’s greatest
‘Living Museum’.
The third leg of the Historic Triangle is Yorktown, just up
the scenic and free-wheeling Colonial Parkway that links the
three unique sites. This is where the British were given the
boot by young America’s ‘rebellious rabble’ of early settlers,
led by George Washington himself. A nation was born, and
the rest, as they say, is history.
No less than eight US Presidents have been Virginians,
and you can visit their palatial homes. Just south of
Washington, DC are the rolling acres of Mount Vernon,
overlooking the Potomac River, where Washington retired to
tend his estate after serving two terms as the new country’s
fi rst President.
Inland, near charming Charlottesville, in the foothills
of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, there’s the home
