Kifaru tipis
kifaru’s nylon teepees are much more
compact, far lighter and easier to
pack up wet than canvas. nylon’s only
downside is extra condensation. buy the
optional liner and get a large size so you
won’t touch the walls. the 4- or 6-person
fits 2 people; the 8-person fits 4.

snowtrekker Winter tents
canvas offers superior breathability and
comfort in truly cold weather, especially
below freezing. snowtrekker’s tents are
made from relatively lightweight 6.5 oz
cotton duck.

Atuk tents
atuk’s canadian tents, made of 10 oz
cotton duck, weigh 9 kg (20 lb) and
up but are well made and affordable.
Paired with a compact folding stove like
the kifaru, the artic and alaskan models
are suitable for packing in a tandem or
very roomy single.

Kifaru stoves
for kayaking you need a stove that folds
flat like the Kifaru. Pure genius, it’s made
of stainless steel and folds up to the size
of a laptop. the medium is a good size
for kayaking.

sims stoves
Made of 24-gauge steel, the sims
sportsman ii is much heavier than the
kifaru and requires extra care to prevent
the kifaru tipi
rust, but it folds flat and packs a lot of heat.

In 2006 my girlfriend and I spent September and October circumnavigating Lake Superior.
Bringing a canvas tent and folding woodstove was the best decision we made. A night didn’t go by,
or a frosty fall morning, when we weren’t thankful to have a portable home to dry our gear, cook
delicious meals, and bask in some much needed warmth. Our two-person Snowtrekker Expedi-
tion tent and Sims Sportsman II woodstove fit into two-thirds of the stern hatch of my Current
Designs Solstice GT. We didn’t carry a camp stove and fuel because we cooked on the woodstove.
With a little practice you can have a tent up and a fire crackling in less than 20 minutes. Here are
a few options for heated tents and folding woodstoves that fit in kayak.
