The majority of GCSE PE students seem to come from a team sport background
and are used to working towards a shared goal. Is your GCSE PE group working
effectively as a team? When good grades are at stake teamwork is essential to
achieving your best.
In this team sports special issue Nick Young (Head of PE at Sackville School,
Kent) examines the similarities between the qualities great teams have
demonstrated and GCSE PE, and asks the question
What makes
a great team?
GCSE PE is a tough sporting contest. You are competing against the rest of the country
for the best grades. Your ‘Cup Final’ is in May 2009 or 2010 and if your class work
together as a team you are giving yourself the best chance to succeed.
England’s Rugby World Cup team of 2003 were a great ‘team’. But their ultimate prize
came after years of effort and determination. You will need to show this level of effort
and determination during your 2 years of ‘training’ towards your ‘Cup Final’.
Every legendary team has individual brilliance, a Jonny Wilkinson, a Cristiano Ronaldo
or Kevin Pietersen. A moment of brilliance can put their team in a winning position but
successful teams are much more than just a group of talented individuals.
A team work together and will always defeat a more
talented group of individuals who do not work as a team.
The foundation to any team is the rest of the players in the team. The England 2003
Rugby World Cup team and Manchester United in the 2008 European Champions League
Cup final were both teams where every player gave their absolute best effort. As a class
if you work well together you will have more chance of success.
Great teams also have a captain and a coach that provide inspirational leadership.
Leaders like Martin Johnson and Sir Clive Woodward, John Terry and Sir Alex Ferguson
