TRAIN THE WAY YOU PLAY
A boxing round lasts 3 minutes and is followed by a one minute rest period before
punches are swapped again. Not surprisingly this is how many boxers train, 3 minutes of
intensive exercise followed by one minute rest. As a form of interval training this perfectly
replicates the physical demands a boxer will face on fight night.
Task:
Think about the physical demands of your sport.
How long is a game? Which fitness components
are needed? Does your position have specific
requirements?
Be specific to what you have
available to you
USE YOUR SURROUNDINGS
One of Sport IQ’s favourite scenes from a sports film comes from Rocky IV when Mr
Balboa prepares to fight his rival in the frozen wastelands of Siberia. Away from the high
tech gym equipment, Rocky gets to work using only his immediate environment to reach
peak fitness. Hollywood make believe? Well, no. And the good news is you don’t need to
go to Siberia!
Uphill or downhill sprints, running on the sandy beach, sprinting from lamppost to
lamppost, cycling to work are all more fun (and cheaper!) ways of getting fit than
pounding the treadmill. You can even turn your own room into a Rocky style gym! Body
weight exercise such as press ups, sit ups and squat thrusts will help you develop your
muscular endurance and enhance your body tone. Attach a chin up bar in your bedroom
and do not allow yourself to leave the room until you have done 10!
Task:
Think about what facilities are available to you at
your school/college. What about near your home?
Plan some training sessions where you will not
require any specialist equipment or facilities.
