and in, while also optimising your touch
around the greens.

of different head shapes to choose from,
you are guaranteed to find something
that fits your eye. And while satin
finishes still make up of the majority of
what’s on offer there are plenty of darker
finishes that many players may prefer.

STEVE’S ADVICE
■ Finding the correct combination of lofts is
key. When buying a wedge make sure that
the shaft length and the lie angle are correct
for your swing – your local pro should be
able to help you with this.
■ Think about the weaknesses in your
wedge play. If you are after more control
around the greens then consider a wedge
with a milled face, as the extra spin should
help your distance judgement. If you want
to increase the height of your approach
shots then pick a wedge with more weight
in the head. If your short game lacks feel,
opt for a softer metal to help your touch.
If you are prone to hitting the odd
“unmentionable”, try an offset model.
■ The type of sand in the bunkers at your
home club should be a major factor in
determining your choice of sand wedge, and
this can vary greatly from course to course.
If your club has soft sand then go for a
wedge with a high bounce angle. If you play
the majority of your golf on links courses
where the sand is more compact, less
bounce will help you drive the clubhead
through smoothly but forcefully.
