IRONS
In association with
STRIKING SELECTION
The driver may be the club that’s first to
catch the eye in any golf bag, but a set of
irons is an investment that should be given
serious consideration before you get your
credit card out.
In recent years the most significant shift
in this market has been the progression of
game-improvement irons. Deep-cavity
models that offer genuine forgiveness are
certainly becoming less unwieldy to look
down on at address. However, there
remains a significant demand for sleek,
traditional-looking irons that hand a
greater level of control over flight and
distance back to the player.

NEIL’S ADVICE
■ Consult your local professional for the
correct advice. Get the irons custom-fitted,
assess the lie and loft of the club head, the
length and flex of the shaft, and the grip
make and size. If you can, compare a
number of different manufacturers – many
outlets willallow you to try clubs. Ask if they
have demo sets available; if possible, take
the set out onto the course and try them
there rather than in a net or on the range.
■ The make-up of your new set of irons is
vital. A standard iron set used to be made
up of 3-iron through to sand iron. Nowadays
there are many hybrid clubs and wedges to
add to your set. Consider carefully what
type of irons you use, depending on the
courses you play regularly. Long irons are
useful if you play in the wind, hybrids are
great if you struggle to hit your long irons,
and consider adding a gap wedge to play
those pitches of an awkward length.
■ Everyone now understands that no two
golfers should play with the same set up of
irons, so having your set custom-fitted is
vital. In this technological age use your
senses to help you when trying new irons.
You should make sure that you feel
comfortable with the whole set.
