Welsh Recruitment

Issue 22

Christmas is coming!

Alright, I know there are still another 12 weeks or so before we don the coloured paper hats and watch granny get sloshed on her annual glass of sherry. Before you know it, you’ll be waking up a week later to join the masses as you resolve to find a new job for the New Year. But why wait until competition for jobs will be at its fiercest? Turn to Page 8 and start your job search sooner rather than later! Many of you will have graduated this summer, and may be questioning what you are going to do with your life. This week, we talk to a recent graduate from Cardiff University to find out what her experience has been. A recent survey found that single parents are often discriminated against when looking for work. We speak to a single father who enrolled on a Jobseekers course and ended up teaching the very same course himself. The Welsh jobs market is unique. Around 95 per cent of businesses in Wales employ less than 10 people, with the remaining 5 per cent employing as many as 60 per cent of workers in this country. And with 3 people in 1,000 setting up a new business in Cardiff every year, we take a look at why you should consider a career with a small business; after all, isn’t it better to be a big fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big pond?

Page 6, WR meets a graduate

Wales has one of the highest proportions of working-age graduates than anywhere else in the UK, and with more and more students choosing to stay in Wales after they have completed their studies, it can be a daunting time for jobseekers. This issue, we talk to a graduate who tackled the job market head-on and now works for the Care Council for Wales.

Page 8, Small business? Big prospects

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are becoming increasingly important to the Welsh economy. Welsh Recruitment offers you advice and helpful hints on how to go about making your mark on smaller, newer companies and become a key member of the team.

Page 17, Opportunities for All

Opportunities for All showcases the story of Paul Napier, a lone parent who ended up tutoring the very same Jobseekers Mandatory Course that he attended himself. No matter your circumstances or social standing, employment is possible if you seize the opportunity.
