NHS Trust has recently
switched on a new energy
efficient combined heat and
power system that is set to
slash £2 million off the Trust’s
energy bills.
The savings will enable the Royal
Shrewsbury Hospital to spend more on
frontline patient services.
The combined heat and power
system, designed and installed by energy
experts, Ener-g Combined Power Ltd,
will also mean big reductions in the
Trust’s carbon emissions, a factor that
has led to the Carbon Trust awarding a
grant of £549,000 – the maximum
grant available.
The natural gas powered system will
generate one megawatt of electricity an
hour, 24 hours a day, and hospital chiefs
say it will improve patient comfort.
It will allow temperatures on the wards
to be brought down from the current 25-
27 degrees to an average of 21 degrees.
Andy Hudson, the trust’s acting
head of capital, said the deal with Ener-g
Combined Power would make the
hospital trust a model for others in the
NHS to follow.
“I would like to see this as a
demonstration site for what can be
achieved in terms of energy savings and
improvements to the patient environment”,
