The real holiday fever

Most of us cannot wait until we go away on holiday to escape the stresses and strains of everyday life. But a recent report from Investors in People, the workplace improvement organisation, has revealed that for many of us, our stress levels actually increase in the days running up to our break away.

51 per cent of us will work longer hours in the run-up to our annual holiday. From tying up loose-ends and preparing your workload for a colleague to manage in your absence can take a few days before you go away. And often the thought of what you will be coming back to after your holiday has ended can have the effect of ruining the final few days of your well-earned break

Holidays should be a time to relax, not a time to worry. So if you have to rely on a colleague to handle some of your work whilst you are drinking your Sangria in the sun then choose a reliable colleague and plan their extra workload well in advance.

Traditionally summer sees a slowdown in hiring activity but, employment in Wales is at its highest ever levels. This month, Peter Hain, Secretary of State for Work & Pensions announced new reforms that will close the employment gaps between different groups in society and raise the employment rate to 80 per cent.

Is this too ambitious? Perhaps not given the mass number of redevelopment projects taking place across Wales. At the time of writing, there have been several new construction plans announced that will create in excess of 3,000 new jobs alone.

These are exciting times for Wales. The old coal, iron and steel industries may have long gone but the rise of the new service and communications industries are helping to put Wales on the map and our region in particular is attracting the cream of the crop.
