DIABETES RESEARCH

Understanding the mechanisms of diabetes towards healthy and independent living

Diabetes is costing Ireland close to €600M each year, according to the CODEIRE study led by Professor John Nolan, consultant endocrinologist and head of the Metabolic Research Unit at St. James’s Hospital. His team is studying the causes of severe insulin resistance, a major forerunner of Type 2 Diabetes, and recently published a paper on the phenomenon (previously unknown) of complete failure to respond to exercise training in obese young people with Type 2 Diabetes.

Professor Nolan leads a cross-university diabetes research group within the new Dublin Centre for Clinical Research (DCCR), a partnership between Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He is Chair of Postgraduate Education with the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).

Novo Nordisk has been supporting Professor Nolan’s research through an educational grant since 2003. To consolidate research in diabetes it is planned to appoint a chair. A commitment of €1M is needed over five years.

DENTAL OVERSEAS VOLUNTARY ELECTIVES (DOVE)

Giving back, experiencing differences, learning and making new connections

DOVE supports 4th year dental students who travel to developing countries on placement where they work in their capacity as senior dental students improving services, patient care and promoting investment in equipment at grassroots levels through voluntary contributions.

This project was supported by the TCD Association & Trust in 2007/08, see page 28

"The trip was a great success and an eye opener to the outside world. Dental treatment varies around the globe and students travel to countries from South America to Asia experiencing these differences, learning and making connections that will be continued into their professional life."

Without doubt, Trinity’s plans for the Biosciences Development will transform research in Dublin, Ireland and the world.

It is the most ambitious capital development in the history of the College. The research that this building will house will have a major effect on the health and
well-being of us all.

As Chairman of Trinity Foundation, I am keen that this priority project gets the support it needs and deserves. While we hope to secure significant public funding, we know that to deliver a quality building that will properly complement and nurture the excellent research that our world class academics are delivering, we need private support.

Commitments to support the Biosciences Development have been secured from Trinity Foundation board members. We are hoping that alumni will join us as we make the building a reality.

"At a time when the country is going through a difficult economic period, we are pleased that our support for TILDA will help Ireland position itself for the future. Data on ageing is particularly important in the Irish context in order to plan efficient allocation of resources."
