BIOSCIENCES DEVELOPMENT

Transforming Trinity, Dublin, Ireland and the world

The Biosciences Development is the most ambitious construction project in Trinity’s history. It will redefine the scientific research landscape in the College and will allow Ireland to take an international lead on the delivery of quality research. The building will be central to the redevelopment of Pearse Street.

This Development will build on Trinity College Dublin’s leadership position in immunology, neuroscience and cancer to bring Ireland to the frontiers of research benefiting human health and society. Trinity will have scale and interdisciplinarity, with an integrated environment removing barriers ‘beyond biology’.

Trinity is planning to maximise existing areas of strength creating, within the Development, several defined centres:
• Centre for Cancer Drug Discovery
• Centre for Bioengineering and Medical Device
Technologies
• Immunology Research Centre
• Medical Teaching Facility

With an estimated cost of €115M, the Development will be funded by a combination of exchequer and private funds. A major campaign is under way to raise funds for the building. €5.5M has been pledged from private sources to date.

THE IRISH LONGITUDINAL STUDY ON AGEING (TILDA)

Helping make Ireland the best place in the world to grow old

TILDA is a study of a representative cohort of at least 8,000 Irish people over the age of 50, charting their health, social and economic circumstances over a 10 year period. The data from TILDA will provide policy-makers and innovators in the fields of health, social care, pension planning and biotechnology with a unique knowledge base. It will create opportunities for research and development as well as innovation in technology and services in ageing in Ireland.

With the pilot phase now complete, the first wave of the study is due to start in autumn of 2009. The estimated cost of the main study is €30M. €23M funding comes from a unique partnership of the Department of Health and Children, The Atlantic Philanthropies and Irish Life representing state, private and corporate sources.

SEAMUS FLYNN
RESEARCH LABORATORY

Lung cancer and tuberculosis: Addressing epidemic killers through research

Trinity College hospitals treat in excess of 500 cases of lung cancer each year; this is a devastating disease from which only 15% of patients will achieve long term survival. Located in the Trinity Centre for Health Sciences at St.James’s, the respiratory diseases research lab is dedicated to the research of respiratory illnesses to generate better treatments and tests.

The research laboratory houses the pulmonary group, headed up by Professor Joseph Keane, who with his team, is conducting ground-breaking research into lung cancer and tuberculosis and has recently published a new test for lung cancer in Nature Medicine.

The laboratory was named after a distinguished Trinity alumnus, the late Seamus Flynn, M.B., M.A. (1960), following a generous bequest and successful alumni appeal.

The €87,000 currently raised will enable the group to appoint a lab manager to allow senior investigators to concentrate on research rather than administrative duties. The laboratory needs €250,000 over four years.

"The Atlantic Philanthropies is very pleased to support TILDA and is confident that its findings will enrich the lives of older people in Ireland. TILDA will make a major contribution to evidence based policy and planning on ageing. The emerging data will inform attitudes and enable enhanced service provision. Its many innovative features are already attracting international interest."
