Training and Personal Development
All the skills require in the modern workplace – and how to get them.
Thinking about becoming the next apprentice? Make sure you get skilled up first.
Sir Alan Sugar has only just hired his latest Apprentice and already the BBC is calling for ambitious and bright business people to apply for the next series of the popular TV show. Every one of this year’s contestants thought they had the skills to be Sir Alan’s latest protégé but is a loud mouth and the ability to sell ice to the Eskimos really enough in today’s modern world of work? The skills experts at Pitman Training believe not.
Leanne Waring of Pitman Training in Cardiff believes that modern business people need a lot more than arrogance and a ruthless streak if they really want to succeed.
“More than 93 per cent of businesses in the UK with ten or more employees use personal computers and so it’s vital that ambitious people have the practical skills that organisations need, “explains Leanne
“In my experience, employers are looking for staff who have both personal qualities and the practical skills and experience to back them up. The organisations who send their staff members to us want well trained, confident and professional people who understand good business practice and have great IT or specialist office skills. Being able to sell yourself is incredibly important but you have to have the basics in place first.”
Pitman Training has more than 80 training centres across the UK, offering a wide range of courses. Subjects include basic computer skills for those with little or no experience, advanced IT qualifications, business and customer service courses, secretarial diplomas, accountancy, payroll and web design.
Recognising that today’s aspiring Apprentices are busy people, Pitman Training courses are completely flexible. “We offer a self-paced method of learning without the restrictions of a traditional classroom.
Learners are provided with an audio CD and workbook and a tutor is always on hand to answer questions and provide support and encouragement,” says Leanne.
“Our students can choose the study times that suit them best – fitting their learning in around other commitments. And unlike many colleges, where you have to wait for the start of a new term, you can start learning as soon as you are ready and then use your new skills to take your career to the next level.”
