Select Education calls for Early Years Professionals

With the introduction of vocational training at one end of the education spectrum and the call for higher qualified early years professionals at the other, the education system is changing.
In fact, with Ofsted’s call for improvement in literacy and calculation for under-fives and Every Child Matters, there is now more than ever a spotlight on pre-school learning. If these initiatives are going to be successful, changes need to be tackled head-on to stop the domino effect of late intervention in early years education, especially if the 2000 Foundation Stage Curriculum Guidance is to be a success.
The grass-root problems behind skills gaps at the foundation stage, such as a lack of guidance on gender roles and English as a second language, highlight the need to recruit intelligently in the sector and underpin the current high demand for qualified early years practitioners.
Additionally, there needs to be a personnel focus on language support assistants and bi-lingual nursery staff – both from a language and role model perspective – and an increase in male nursery nurses, to plug the gaps in language and boys’ confidence skills.
With the latest research from The Campaign for Learning revealing that infant aged pupils understand the process of their learning, it is paramount to maintain and increase the momentum of recruitment and training in the early years sector in order to optimise child development at this age, so there are plenty of full and part time vacancies in the sector for those that are currently in, or looking to work in early years.
The research makes it clear that the development of children at this stage is increasingly being recognised as a critical learning juncture. As such the emphasis on providing the sector with practitioners and teachers with the qualifications and training to support this is key. It is also crucial that the development of qualifications such as Early Years Professional Status stress the importance of understanding and developing personalised learning strategies, underpinning the foundation stage curriculum.
Certainly, the Early Years Professional Status and the drive for increased training and qualifications in this sector offer an opportunity to see the quality of education in foundation stages rise, but it is essential that recruitment choices accurately reflect the education needs of this critical personal development stage.
Here at Select Education, we’re increasingly seeing a heightened demand for qualified and experienced pre-school teachers, nursery nurses and assistants, so it’s an exciting and buoyant time for those working within the sector who may be looking for their next role or those looking to move into the supply practitioner arena.
