T5: So it might be better to say force acts / there is a force acting on the toboggan is better than –
RI: – they have a force there is a force innately coming from them themselves –
T5: – yeah I think if you were gonna say anything, if you want to / if kids are not happy with the idea of giving up, the
fact that they have / that there is something that makes things happen, then if they use the word force and mean to say
OK let’s just call that word energy. Because I think that most kids would be quite happy to change the word force for
energy ‘cause all they wanna say is that it has something that’s making it happen –
RI: – right has something that’s making it happen –
T5: – yeah but the word force is scientifically incorrect.
RI: So at face value of the words then?
T5: So face value of the words, em, it’s false because –
RI: – because they have energy –
T5: – that’s right –
RI: – due to the action of a force?
T5: Yeah, fine.
RI: OK good let’s move on. OK with this?
T5: Yeah yeah it’s good. I’m having a whale of a time here.
Concept Map Interview (directly following PSTS)
Spontaneous Map
RI: I’d like to ask a few more things, that are sort of emerging from, the concept maps if we could yeah? It’s mainly just
an elaboration on words really and I just want you to explain some of the words there. Em; energy comes from energy
resources that’s fine; energy resources can be fuels that’s fine. Yeah, we were talking about forms of energy first of all
and you just mentioned something about when you were doing this list about oh maybe this is not technically correct,
you were saying at KS3 –
T5: – em, simply because, KS3 though sound, and heat in particles, / heat and light you could you could / if it’s radiated
heat, you could lump together and sound and particle heat you could lump in that they’re both movements of particles.
Em, at KS3 I wouldn’t make that distinction other than / only with the most able. Em, and kinetic energy you know,
‘cause you could say that for example with particles that it’s a form of kinetic energy.
RI: Right OK that’s fine and about the em, what did I want to ask about the waste; so energy flows to make things
happen em, yeah that’s fine, and we were starting here energy waste / energy waste happens ‘when things happen’ (in
unison). Em, and it’s a problem in particular with, non-renewable fuels OK -
T5: – with non-renewables. Now that’s an interesting one isn’t it yes why did I write that?
RI: Now are you talking about the energy waste or are you talking about the waste from the material?
T5: I’m talking about the, em energy waste I think. Although no actually no, no that’s not right is it. Whatever I meant, I
think I mean, it’s a waste to the material yes fine. I don’t think I meant that when I wrote that but that was wrong yes.
RI: That’s fine so you mean the material OK.
Additional Lines of Enquiry
RI: OK and finally my couple of devil’s advocate questions about energy in general. Em, let’s talk about energy forms
for a minute and em, I’ll go back to something that we talked about in the interview about the way / about all the
diagrams and things. This is a hypothetical devil’s advocate question. If you were forbidden, from talking about, energy
forms like sound heat etc. if if / let’s just say you were forbidden because a totalitarian government came in / forbade
you from talking about energy forms. Could you do it, could you teach energy? Would it be possible?
T5: Em;
RI: – or would you be happy with it? Would you not be happy with it?
T5: Em, I wouldn’t be happy with it because I think it’s too abstract. It goes back to that Richard Feynman thing. It’s too
abstract, to say things happen, and then to say; / no I don’t think / I couldn’t do it I couldn’t do it. Em, there has to be a
way in and even though, as we clarified earlier on there some picky points here that you could go through, I mean
there’s some other ones as well you know chemical you know / as a potential energy and so on you know there’s some
other picky ones. Em, but it’s a way in.
RI: Right so you appreciate some of the, em maybe correct / you appreciate difficulties of the correctness with it –
