6.5. Energy Efficiency
6.5.1. Correct Scientific Use of Efficiency
Many teachers were able to clearly state the scientific meaning for efficiency, either
spontaneously or when asked. At a basic level, energy efficiency was to do with
comparing output and input energies and considering waste or ‘lost’ energy, e.g.:
(T29) With the least amount of energy … without wasting energy … least
loss of heat through friction, heat loss etc.

He also talked about efficiency under the umbrella of ‘conserving’ or ‘saving’ energy.
Thus, an efficient device or process saved energy. This was echoed by T30:
I mean you could talk about the fact em, how wasteful it {heater} probably
is in terms of er energy consumption because the heat is actually going out
through the window, … and then you could lead into that how could you
make them more energy efficient.

Descriptions rooted in the model of energy transformations were prevalent. Under this
model, efficiency was described as the ability to convert one form of energy into another,
looking at the useful energy changed, minimising the waste or loss of energy (T3, T4, T6,
T16, T23, T25, T28), exemplified by T34:
I mean if we talk about the efficiency of a motor car you’re equating or
you’re measuring the amount of useful energy in terms of kinetic energy
that you get from chemical potential energy of your petrol.

T7 was the only participant to use the concept under the transfers model. Here, efficiency
was still expressed in terms of energy input and output, but in terms of how much energy
was transferred.

Teachers 2, 3, 5, 7, 19 and 33 were clear that efficient did not mean quick or convenient.
This, however, did not presuppose that they all had good scientific understandings of
efficient. For example, T19 could not, at the time of the interview, remember the equation
for efficiency.
6.5.2. Vernacular or Confused Use of Efficiency
A surprising 12/25 teachers answered ‘true’ to Q13, thereby implying that efficient was
equated with ‘quick’.
