The Institution of Engineering and Technology
Railway Network
Annual Lecture and Dinner
Creating the Right Conditions for Rail Freight Growth
Thursday, 23 October 2008 | The IET | Savoy Place | London | UK
The Speaker
Lord Berkeley is Chairman of the Rail Freight Group, the representative body of the UK rail freight industry.
The Lecture
The Railway Network’s annual gala evening provides an unrivalled opportunity to network and become further involved
with the IET. Each year the lecture is given by a high profile speaker who gives unique insight into the future direction of
railways in the UK and Europe.
Environmental and economic pressures are expected to increase the emphasis on rail travel as an alternative means
of transportation and all point to a significant growth in demand for rail freight over the next 20 years.
Lord Berkeley will explore the reasons and suggest solutions to the capacity and capability challenges that the railway
will face, including more electrification of the network.
