The Trent Valley Scheme
Network Rail has just gained some new infrastructure!
During a 16 day blockade of the West Coast Main Line
(WCML) between Rugby and Stafford, contractors have
delivered a further major milestone which sees most of the
infrastructure renewed between Atherstone in the South
and Armitage in the North, transferring the new signalling
control point for the area to Rugby SCC and doubling the
existing 2 track railway to 4 tracks.
Work at the adjacent site on the Nuneaton Project, where 7
new SSI interlockings were brought into use, along with major
re-modelling works at Rugby all add up to make this the
biggest single change to signalling the UK has seen for many
years. 125mph running will now be possible on most of this
portion of the WCML. This has achieved a speed increase in
many places, with a significantly improved capacity to cope
with the ever increasing demand for train paths.
The delivery model used by Network Rail was 'hub and
spoke'. This was managed by Network Rail as the hub, with
contractors covering different disciplines forming the
View of Lichfield site depot spokes. One of the spokes, Signalling Solutions Limited
(previously a MAFF depot) just (SSL), was responsible for the installation and
to the north of Lichfield station. commissioning of the signalling, telecommunications,
signalling power, along with minor civil engineering
elements of the Trent Valley Four Tracking (TV4) project. As
