EDITOR’S
Wow! Now I know there’s still hope for us all yet! It’s really not a downhill path from
childhood onwards. True, your brain grows the most as a child but neuroscience now
tells us that new brain cells can grow whatever age, as long as we are challenged,
interested, vary our experiences and get exercising . . .
I was extremely lucky to spend a day with Eric Jensen, the American pioneer of
“brain-based” learning, during a teacher-training day at Dulwich College Prep School.
LETTER...
He had teachers running, whooping and clapping to get us in the right frame of mind
to learn; putting us under a little time pressure and encouraging us to introduce
ourselves to new people to get us to experience the effect of rushes of chemicals on
the brain; and much more - exhausting but exhilarating!
His aim was to highlight the central role of the brain and how we treat it in assisting
kids with learning, attention, memory and ultimately an enriched childhood.
A fascinating insight into how the way we behave towards others, not just our children, affects their wellbeing and
consequently their motivation to achieve. And for me, the realisation that, while wanting to provide the best possible
start in life for our children, we shouldn’t forget our own needs. I hope this issue of Eds Up sets you on your way!
